Getting started · UMBRACO

Installation & licensing

Install the package, activate license.lic and troubleshoot licensing on your own Umbraco website.

Install the package

In an existing Umbraco application, add the MegaForm package and build the website:

dotnet add package MegaForm.Umbraco
dotnet build
dotnet run

Choose a released package version compatible with your Umbraco and .NET versions. The package contains version-specific adapters for Umbraco 13–18; this demonstration is running Umbraco 17.6.2 on .NET 10. That is the runtime verified on this site.

Complete the first checks

  1. Sign in at /umbraco/ with a backoffice administrator account.
  2. Open MegaForm. Check Dashboard, a new form, and Submissions.
  3. If another editor cannot see the section, review that user's Umbraco group access and MegaForm permissions.
  4. Add a MegaForm Form Picker property to a test Document Type and render its value.
  5. Publish the form and test the public page in a signed-out browser.

Activate your license

license.lic is the activation file supplied with your MegaForm purchase. It activates MegaForm on your Umbraco installation. Do not open, run or edit this file: upload it through MegaForm's backoffice settings.

  1. From My downloads, download package + license and extract the ZIP. You will find the .nupkg package, license.lic and INSTALL.txt.
  2. Install MegaForm in your own Umbraco website, then build and restart that application. You can install the included .nupkg through a local NuGet source or use the NuGet.org command above. Keep NuGet.org enabled for dependencies.
  3. Sign in at /umbraco/ on your own website with a backoffice administrator account. The purchase/download account on this demo site is a separate account; it does not grant administrator access to your website.
  4. Open MegaForm → Settings → License.
  5. Under License file, click Choose File and select the extracted license.lic. Select the file itself, not the ZIP or .nupkg.
  6. Click Activate license. Activation takes effect immediately; a second application restart is not required for this step.
  7. Confirm the status is Active, with the message “MegaForm is activated for this Umbraco installation.”

Without a valid license, trial restrictions apply, including on localhost. Installing the NuGet package alone does not activate a license.

Where the license is stored

MegaForm saves the uploaded file privately at App_Data/MegaForm/license.lic, relative to your Umbraco application's content root. You normally do not need to copy it there manually. Preserve this private file when redeploying your site.

Keep the filename license.lic and keep the file private. Do not place it in wwwroot, upload it to a public repository, or include it in a redistributable package. The public NuGet package intentionally does not contain a customer license.

If activation does not succeed

  • Not activated: extract the purchased ZIP, choose license.lic and click Activate license. Selecting a file alone does not activate it.
  • Invalid license: download your license again from My downloads and upload that original file. Do not substitute the ZIP, package or installation text.
  • License file could not be read or saved: ask your hosting administrator to check that the application can write to App_Data/MegaForm and that deployment has preserved the private license file.
  • Cannot find License settings: check that the MegaForm package is installed and that your backoffice account has permission to manage MegaForm settings.

Before upgrading

Back up content, submissions, configuration and private files. Test the package on staging, including the public form, native picker, backoffice authentication and integrations. See Troubleshooting & upgrades.
